No. 1026475, Devon and Cornwall Autistic Trust.
It was founded in 1982 by a group of parents for whose autistic children, as they approached adulthood, there was no clear provision in view other than old-fashioned institutionalisation in long stay hospitals.
Originally known as the Devon & Cornwall Autistic Community Trust, the organisation grew rapidly, acquiring new homes in Cornwall and service users from across the UK.
As it grew, the organisation developed and refined its approaches towards managing autism, and in particular the associated challenging behaviours.
Together with other professionals, a methodology of strategies and interventions was devised which became the core of Spectrum’s non-aversive, proactive positive behaviour management techniques.
In 2000 the organisation rebranded itself as Spectrum and has continued to expand. The most recent developments are domiciliary care and supported living.
