Training and continuous professional development are essential in creating and maintaining a high standard of support for autistic people.
Spectrum’s training team provides much of the training in house. All new team members are enrolled during induction to undertake the Care Certificate. They receive autism-specific training and all necessary statutory training.
To be an effective care worker, you need to relate to the service users so that they can relate to you. This helps them to develop their communication and social skills which is one of the main aims of a supportive and successful care provision. A caring approach and a professional outlook are also very important.
New recruits become members of care teams working in our homes, all with differing skills, experiences and backgrounds meaning each person can contribute something unique to the mix. In order to make the most of our teams’ abilities we make sure that they receive thorough training and gain a comprehensive understanding of autism.
Induction training consists of ten days covering the following subjects:
- An overview of Spectrum’s values and the role of the Care Support Worker
- Health and Safety
- Infection Control
- Fire Safety
- Food Hygiene
- Safeguarding/Mental Capacity Act (MCA)/Deprivation of Liberty (DoLS)
- First Aid
- Care Certificate
We then incorporate into this induction specialist training on:
- Autism Awareness and Communication
- Positive Behavioural Support
- Positive Behavioural Management with Physical Intervention Techniques (PBM)
Over three decades of experience has proven that learning does not stop. We ensure that team members continue their professional development and training through regular updates of each of the subjects that were introduced at the induction stage. Due to the nature of the differing roles within our organisation, we offer specialist training in epilepsy and specific subjects at management level for safeguarding.
Spectrum is a registered City and Guilds apprenticeship and diploma provider across all levels ranging from level 2 to 5 for Managers.
